After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a Master’s in School Administration, Mr. Matte held various positions in the Grand-bois and Portneuf school boards.  He was also elected mayor of Saint-Marc-des-Carrières in 1997 and warden of Portneuf MRC in 2005, holding both positions until he was voted MNA for Portneuf on December 8, 2008. Since February 10th 2011, he is the parliamentary assistant to the Minister responsible for Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs and the Canadian Francophonie and Minister responsible for the Reform of Democratic Institutions and Access to Information.

He also fulfilled various functions such as founding president of the West-Portneuf Chamber of Commerce in 1996, member of the Portneuf Local Development Centre (CLD) from 1998 to 2005, secretary-treasurer of the Quebec City region Council of Elected Officials (CRÉ) from 2005 to 2008, and board member of the Quebec Union of Municipalities (UMQ) from 2006 to 2008.

Among his personal interests, Michel Matte enjoys nature—a source of renewal for him—and especially family. He finds grandfathering a particular treat.
