Notary by profession, Lawrence S. Bergman was elected member of the National Assembly for the riding of D’Arcy McGee in the 1994 general election and was re-elected in 1998, 2003, 2007 and 2008.  Since his first election, he occupied many functions among which Minister of Revenue from 2003 to 2007 and Chair of the Commission on Transportation and the Environment in 2007.  He is presently Chair of the Government Caucus and a member of various Committees more particularly the Legislation Committee.  He is also a member of the Delegation of the National Assembly for Relations with European Institutions and a member of the Quebec Section of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association since August 2009.

Mr. Bergman introduced Bill 198 An Act to proclaim Holocaust-Yom Hashoah Memorial Day in Quebec in the National Assembly, which was adopted unanimously by the National Assembly.  He is the recipient of many distinctions and more specifically of the Cultural Development Decoration 2000, presented by the Délégation de la Renaissance française au Québec.
