The Northern Plan’s energy component

3500 MW: To ensure our energy security, industrial development, and clean energy exports

Sept-Îles, November 14, 2008 – In unveiling the first part of its Northern Plan, the Quebec Liberal Party announced that 3500 MW will be added to the 4500 MW of power already planned in Quebec’s energy strategy, bringing the North’s energy goal to 8000 MW by 2035. This power development will ensure Quebec’s energy security, industrial development, and energy exports.

In presenting his party’s energy plans, the leader of the Quebec Liberal Party and Premier of Quebec, Jean Charest, described Quebec’s North as having considerable energy potential, which should be developed to stimulate our economy. “In an effort to generate wealth and promote sustainable development, we will carry through with these projects, which were already part of our energy strategy, and increase Quebec’s power production through new renewable energy projects,” Mr. Charest said.

The additional 3500 MW of power announced is enough electricity to supply 600 000 homes, which is the equivalent of the greater Quebec City region, and the additional investments will ensure full employment in the energy infrastructure sector at least until 2035. Jean Charest specified that local communities in the North will be consulted on the projects and asked to provide some of the required labour, thus providing them the opportunity to actively participate in the Northern Plan.

20% from wind power and new alternative sources
The Quebec Liberal Party is committed to ensuring that 700 MW, or 20% of the 3500 extra megawatts, are produced by wind power and new sources such as the sun and underwater generators in Quebec’s North.

These commitments will make a substantial contribution to greenhouse gas reduction. For example, 8000 MW of hydro-electricity prevents the emission of 14.3 million tonnes of greenhouse gases annually. “These plans strengthen Quebec’s leadership in Canada in the fight against climate change,” said the leader of the Quebec Liberal Party..

During his trip to the North Shore, Jean Charest also announced that a new Quebec Liberal Party government would move forward quickly with plans to add 400 MW of capacity through new facilities at the Ste-Marguerite dam.

“With these clean energy development projects, in the coming years we will expand the horizons of our last great frontier, Quebec’s North,” said Jean Charest. “All Quebecers will benefit from our Northern Plan. It is our future – a future inspired by the vision and leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party.”
